Why Someone would Stay In an Abusive Relationship.

  • You love your partner
  • They have threatened to kill you if you leave.
  • You are afraid of them.
  • You think it will get better.
  • They have promised to change, and you want to believe them
  • You think it is partially your fault because you did want to make them jealous
  • You are afraid you won’t find another partner.
  • You think they love you.
  • When they are nice to you they are wonderful.
  • You don’t want to be alone.
  • You believe you can help them to change.
  • You saw violence growing up and its not as bad as that.
  • You feel that the extreme jealousy is a sign that they really loves you.
  • They have never really “hurt you ” Just small bruises and you don’t really think that low level of violence is abuse.
  • You feel sorry for them. No-one understands them like you.
  • You have low self-esteem as a result of the abusive relationship.
  • If you have children together, you are hesitant to separate the children from their Mother/Father.
